Papier Mache Venetian Masks

Venetian mask makers, called "Maschereri" in Italian, have used the same techniques for hundreds of years to create their remarkable works of art. First, a mold is carved out of clay. The traditional mask is usually a full face mask called a "bauta," often worn with a black veil and a tricorn hat. Half masks, or masks with exaggerated facial features are also made. Once the clay face mold is carved, plaster is poured over the form to make a reverse mold. When the plaster is hard, it is removed from the clay and the papier mache process can begin.
